Saiyan's are a race from a far away planet named Vegeta which originally was Planet Plant. The Saiyans took over Planet Plant and it then became their home planet. A Saiyan has a natural tendency to want to fight, it's in their blood. Upon fighting, a saiyan's power level increases both from winning and losing. Saiyans look like humans but have a tail which transforms them into a giant ape like creature called an oozaru which increases their power ten fold. Such a power is hard to control and only occurs every full moon which on Planet Vegeta happens every 10,000 years.
A Super Saiyan occurs in the saiyan race every 3,000 years which was originally refer to as a Legendary Super Saiyan. Akira Toriyama may have stuffed it up, as many Saiyans went Super Saiyan. Super Saiyans are extremely strong and when they transform to this state their speed and power increase drastically and their hair turns gold and turns upward. The first time you witness a super saiyan is when Goku transforms during his fight against Frieza. To go Super Saiyan a person must have a need and a heart full of hatred. For example Frieza killed Krillin, and Goku got tottally pissed off and went SSJ. Another Example is Vegeta, he was pissed off that he was a super elite saiyan and he had the royal blood most likely to become a Super Saiyan, so vegeta was extremely annoyed with Goku when he did it because he was just a low class saiyan. Brolly was ment to be the true Legendary Super Saiyan though.

Super Saiyan Ultra is the stage between Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan Ultra is more power than speed, the saiyan who achieves this level will become bulky and slow but will also have incredible strength.

Once a Saiyan warrior has become Super Saiyan 2, he will have increased his strength and speed a lot.

Super Saiyan 3 is an extremely powerful level of the Super Saiyan. When Goku first goes Super Saiyan 3 all of the windows on earth break from his power. This transformation changes the facial features of the face, the eyebrows of the character dissapear and a great length of golden hair grows and The face becomes broader than normal. Goku becomes SSJ3 when he fights against Majin Boo (Fat Boo form) and then again when he fights Janemba.

Golden Oozaru is the level just before going SSJ4. This is very similar to going Oozaru except their fur goes a golden colour and their power increases way way more than normal. Goku goes Golden Oozaru when fighting Bebi.

Super Saiyan 4 is the ultimate power, when the Saiyan becomes this his power is way of the scale. A Saiyan goes this by concentrating the power as a Golden Oozaru into a smaller area. When a Saiyan becomes a SSJ4 his hair remains black but does not stand tall but more out. He grows fur (Goku's is red and Vegeta's is brown) and covers his entire body except his abs pecs, hands and face. This form is only seen in Dragonball GT.
